Introduction.
Ø Matthew Arnold has written an essay on ‘Culture and Anarchy ‘in
1867-1868.In this essay’s first chapter he begins his writing with the
introduction of ‘Culture and Anarchy’ which is compared as ‘Sweetness and Light
’through which he clarifies that culture is the study and pursuit of perfection
so that Sweetness and Light both are main characters. In this chapter he pointed
anarchy and he speak of light as one of the characters of perfection and
culture as giving us light.
Ø Doing as one likes.
Ø As Arnold Begins his chapter with the point that is
sweetness and light as well as Arnold also puts stress on ‘Beauty’ to complete
rightly as design it evidently remains to speak also of intelligence or light ,
as a characters of perfection.
Ø A man with the theories of sweetness and light is full
of antipathy against rougher movement.Because according to Matthew Arnold in
his time he was mostly surrounded by this kind of rougher and coarse action
known as ill-calculated action. These action are mainly with an insufficient light
here. Arnold puts a question that what society usually needed or what society people wants to know? And the members of the society
never replies their argues or they never acts as any price and because of not
giving any actions.\
Ø Arnold Prussian friend, Aminius says that…
“Death, sin, cruelty stalk among us,
feeling their maws with innocence and youth”.
Ø And Arnold also concludes that it is impossible to him
that all these remonstrances and reproofs should not affect him.Therby he gives
his views in speaking of light as one of the characters of perfection and
culture provides light, to profit by the objection to drive as a practice as
much as he can.
Ø However in the society the middle class has to
suffered a lot because their voice is suppressed and so that they have not get
voice as well as little bit of education in their life and if they have no
knowledge about the structure of the society or the knowledge of particular
rights so they could not get normal rightful life. Although it is a right of
all human beings who lives in the society.
Ø Sometimes movements which are rough and coarser are
going on arroud us but it is basically related to uor individual primary needs.
Arnold says that this rough and ill-regulated action. This action with an
insufficient light. If in day to day life we get a freedom in practical life
then we can think without any trouble. The main idea is that we do not want to
live with the troubleof thinking and seer constraints of any kind of canon.
Ø Freedom is a worship for us.It is worshiped in itself
but we are just desived to get freedom. It is pleasurable thing to common man
that he is free to do anything whatever he actually wants to do or he would
likes to do.
Ø According to Arnold individually we are the best judge
of our own interests. In a particular state our working-class ,had a strong hold
over the centere and they have also own rights and they have fecility to do as
he likes.
Ø When industrialization came into existence it affected
very well common man’s life.Because of this revolution machinery take place of
middle class people’s place. But any English –men would like to do what he perpectually
wants. The Atlantic , all sorts of objection are raised against the religion of
culture but some of the objectors mocked on this.Although Arnold has puted this
idea publically many scholars like austere Toiler (The editor of the daily
telegraph upbraids him very kindly in sorrowness-for trifling with aesthetics
and poetical facies ,while he himself is bearing the burden and the beat of the
day so , that when he riches at that height he also feels antipathy for middle
class people because he has suffered from that condition as Arnold passes his
life into this kind of condition.
Ø Arnold has given a reference of very good news paper
printed in his time in which quoted text are as under officially came in front
public also.
Ø Whereas Arnold on the another point and he speaks of
culture with an example and influence of machinery world , how it holds us in
the society / it is very important to every nation when in our common notion,
we talks about freedom which shows our idolatry of machine.
Ø “I see my enemies waiting for me with a hungry joy in
their eyes. But I shall elude them.” Is the quote from the essay and here we
can say that Arnold has deeply analyzed his enemies.
Ø The state becomes the right reason for the progress
from where the authority rules over us, but in his times because of revolutionary
ideas they have not marked their struggles because of the highly privileged
class of the society.
Ø For the example now days Mr. Anil Ambani and Mr.
Mukesh Ambani are came into the category of the highly privileged class and
they also have gained market value over the nation or we can say that they have gained their authority
over the capital world as well.
Ø Conclusion.
Ø Our industrialists are just the vesses of sweetness
and light, being wealthy and comfortable it calls.Culture of industrialism and
becomes authentic reconition. From authority/ we found nothing else but jealous
classes and a dead lock.
Ø For example in present days there is a trend of Right
To Information, through which people can ask question what arise in their minds but nobody dares to question to
other members of the society because of the class, power, money, capital, status,
gender, etc- makes differentiations in the society.
Ø “The principles which will obtain recognition in the
future are the future is the principles for which I have long and jealousy labored.
I qualified myself for joining in the work of harvest by doing to the best of
my ability the duties of seed-time.
